An Gaol A Thug Mi Og

Back to song list

I have translated the title as ‘Young Love’, but I wasn’t sure what the song was about.  I have now found an English translation of the lyrics.  I wasn’t at all sure if the song were about someone who was in love with someone when he was young, or if the person he was in love with was the young one.  The title didn’t make that clear.  The Gaelic word ‘og’ means young.  The word ‘gaol’ means love.  ‘Thug’ can mean take, carry or bring – so the love could have been ‘taken’ when young, or ‘brought’ when young….  Anyway, the translation makes it all a lot clearer!

On a May morning when the dew

Lay gently on top of the grass

And the tender flowers, new and beautiful

Were awakening in their glory

And the sun shining on their surfaces

Like delicate, golden jewels

This often brings to my mind

The love I gave in my youth

When I see the cattle and their young

Playing happily in the meadows

And I see the beautiful thrush

And her chosen mate mong the branches

Preparing her empty nest

For her tender, helpless young

This often brings to my mind

The love I gave in my youth

When I see the quiet and comely maiden

With love free from treachery or guile

Happily picking roses

Along with the loved one she desired

And I see the friendly, manly lad

Singing beside the pure maid

This often brings to my mind

The love I gave in my youth

But the flowers must sprout forth

Which today lie dormant in the earth

And when the calm summer comes around

The birds will rejoice

Many unseen changes will come about

Which will not be free from sorrow

This often brings to my mind

The love I gave in my youth
